On the 29th of each month, we traditionally eat gnocchi as part of a certain ritual.
Here’s what Christine, the artist behind the Materiaal Series artwork, has to say about this tradition (gnocchi recipe and more drawings included):
Gnocchi on the 29th – An Uruguayan Tradition
In Uruguay, it’s customary to eat gnocchi on the 29th of every month. This tradition to eat gnocchi has its roots in the strong Italian immigration. I learned from a Uruguayan chef how to easily make them yourself.
Recipe for Homemade Gnocchi
Ingredients:
* Starchy potatoes
* Flour
* SaltPreparation:
1. Boil starchy potatoes, let them cool, and peel them.
2. Finely mash the potatoes and mix them with some flour and salt to form a loose dough.
3. Dust a board with flour and roll the dough into sausages about 1.5 to 2 centimeters in diameter.
4. Cut the dough sausages into pieces about 2 centimeters long.
5. Bring lightly salted water to a boil and add the gnocchi in batches. The gnocchi are ready when they float to the surface.The Story Behind the Ritual
It is a Rio de la Plata ritual that before serving the gnocchi, you place a coin under your plate. After the meal, you take the money back. This will hopefully help you to have plenty to eat for the entire next month.
Legend attributes this ritual to Saint Pantaleon. In the 3rd century, he was invited to eat by poor farmers. After they shared their meager meal with him, they found money under their plates, and their fish catch was particularly abundant the following year.
Enjoy your meal!
