This is a recording of an impromptu session from June 14, 2025, featuring the Leaf Audio Microphonic Soundbox and the Yamaha Reface CP, performed by Merey Senocak, multimedia artist based in İstanbul and Berlin.
Her performance was recorded using Bernhard’s personal sound-looping and altering setup.
The Leaf Audio Microphonic Soundbox is a compact, experimental electro-acoustic instrument built for real-time sound design and sonic exploration. It’s essentially a wooden box filled with various sound-generating elements, all amplified by built-in contact microphones. The Yamaha Reface CP is a portable digital piano that excels at emulating the classic electric piano and keyboard sounds of the 1970s and 80s, complete with crucial vintage effects.
During this session, Merey performed on both instruments, with their signals routed through Bernhard’s live setup for looping and sound alteration. Interestingly, the Soundbox’s contact microphones also captured incidental sounds from the performance space, including spoken words and even Merey’s dog, Suki, barking as she entered the room. During the performance, Bernhard not only manipulated the incoming sound, but he also added some keyboard parts later.
This 40-minute recording is a fascinating journey into sound. It begins with expansive, rich noises, slowly evolving into a beautifully immersive and enthralling sonic experience.
