Wöstheinrich, Lankow & von Garnier – Materiaal 056︱The Wilhelmshagen Sessions 20220617

Materiaal Series, Vol. 056

Recording of a studio session at Andreas von Garnier’s Synthasis Studio in Wilhelmshagen, Berlin, June 17, 2022.

The Wilhelmshagen sessions, taking place on a non-regular basis at Andreas’s studio, are a opportunity to experiment, play around, try out various new settings and combinations and eventually go completely bonkers.

The current Wilhelmshagen Session is themed by three potatoes already that overdue to sprout shoots.
The German potato is greatly underestimated in its improvisational talent. But if one only thinks of its origins in the Americas, its changeful history, and the potato’s ability to form these astonishingly baroque shoots, the term “şişko patates” (thick potato) which is commonly used in Turkey for “tubby fat dumb,” does not really apply and it should be understood rather as flattery.

Wöstheinrich, Spahn & Lankow – Materiaal 055︱The Wedding Sessions 20220129

Materiaal Series, Vol. 055

Recording of the third session together with artist Wolfgang Spahn and his large, self-built modular system in Wolfgang’s studio in the Gerichtshöfe, January 29, 2022; Wedding district in Berlin.

This release is themed op-art, as Christine Kriegerowski has contributed her takes on Vasarely’s “Reech”.

Wolfgang Spahn is an Austrian-German visual artist based in Berlin. His work includes interactive installations and performances of light & sound. His art explores the field of analogue and digital media and focuses on both their contradiction and their correlation. That’s why he is also specialized in re-appropriated and re-purposed electronic technologies.

For his creations he explores the abilities of hardware, constantly pushing its limitations in order to make it serve his artistic concept. Recently he developed analogue synthesizers as well as analogue computers and analog neuron networks and uses them to create abstract light-and-sound-sculptures.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich & Wolfgang Seidel – Materiaal 054︱exRotaprint Sessions 20220415

Materiaal Series, Vol. 054

On April 15, 2022, Bernhard and Wolfgang Seidel met for a recording session in Wolfgang’s studio that is situated in a former printing press manufacturing plant in Berlin’s Wedding district.

Wolfgang’s studio is not only equipped with a wide range of electronic musical instruments, but also various acoustic percussion instruments and all kinds of sound sources are ready miked and prepared for recordings at any time. And so, the recording session took place in a very focussed mood, and it then resulted into something that has quite a narrational and heteromorphic flow.

The recordings were mixed by Wolfgang. For the second piece he later overdubbed additional drums. Also, the length of the two tracks is intentionally set to suggest a vinyl release.

Christine Kriegerowski depicted the musicians as stylites or pillar-saints. Stylites are a type of Christian ascetic who lives on pillars, they believe that the mortification of their bodies would help ensure the salvation of their souls.
This image of the two musicians as pillar-saints is of course not without self-irony and alludes to how much musicians of this genre are on a lost cause.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich & Alexander Paul Dowerk – Materiaal 053︱Vault Amusement 20220212

Materiaal Series, Vol. 053

On February 12, 2022, Alexander Paul Dowerk, a Berlin-based music producer, composer and touch guitarist, was invited to a Materiaal recording session at the Secret Vault Studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin.
The recordings resulted in a complex and powerful interplay between Bernhard and Alexander, rich in variety. Alexander brought a strong sense of detail and groove with complex rhythmical structures to Bernhard’s impromtu electronica madness.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich & Volker Lankow – Materiaal 052︱Studio Session 20210812

Materiaal Series, Vol. 052

A set of impromptu performed electronic music, recorded on August 12, 2021 in Berlin, Germany.

It’s August 2021, and the live public music scene is still in a state of total gridlock. But for a musician it also doesn’t seem to be an appropriate reaction to stop making music altogether. Hoping for better times, I invited Volker to my studio for a recording session.
