Wöstheinrich, Lankow & von Garnier – Materiaal 056︱The Wilhelmshagen Sessions 20220617

Materiaal Series, Vol. 056

Recording of a studio session at Andreas von Garnier’s Synthasis Studio in Wilhelmshagen, Berlin, June 17, 2022.

The Wilhelmshagen sessions, taking place on a non-regular basis at Andreas’s studio, are a opportunity to experiment, play around, try out various new settings and combinations and eventually go completely bonkers.

The current Wilhelmshagen Session is themed by three potatoes already that overdue to sprout shoots.
The German potato is greatly underestimated in its improvisational talent. But if one only thinks of its origins in the Americas, its changeful history, and the potato’s ability to form these astonishingly baroque shoots, the term “şişko patates” (thick potato) which is commonly used in Turkey for “tubby fat dumb,” does not really apply and it should be understood rather as flattery.

Reichenhall – Hunt & Lore

Reichenhall is a combine for recycled electronic music consisting of Bernhard Wöstheinrich and Lukas Radiomodul.
Like in a scrap yard for electronic music, everything that comes into their hands is taken apart and disassembled into its pieces. From this, they generate new audio tracks that are then shot back into the audio cosmos. An experimental kraut-ish medley awaits the listener, that leads deep down into rooms in danger of collapsing of Berlin clubs of the 1990s

The title “Hunt & Lore” refers to the german words for minecart and -wagon. The band name Reichenhall came from a wordplay on the german phrase “reichlich hall”, meaning plenty of reverb. As it also sounds very much like Reichenhall which is the name of a city where mining has been carried out for centuries due to rich salt deposits, it is the reason for general mining-theme of this release.

Ornah Mental – Strong and Stable

Exorcising the evil spirits of modern times

Ornah Mental is Dirk Schlömer’s Ethno- Dub, Kraut- and Space – Rock playground, that started out as Dirk’s solo-project in 2001, Bernhard joined in 2018.
Ornah Mental’s now eighth release is another true celebration of organic groove music.

Dirk Schlömer is no stranger to the German music scene. Born in Cologne, he was guitarist in the german band “Ton Steine Scherben“; one of the first and most influential German language rock bands of the 1970s and early 1980s, a musical mouthpiece of a new left movement during that time and in their hometown of West Berlin in particular. Schlömer also worked closely with Rio Reiser, the front man of that same band, but who later started to work as a solo artist. Furthermore Schlömer was the Mastermind of “Das Zeichen“, a german gothic-ethno project, to name just those out of many others bands and projects worth mentioning.

As Schlömer’s story and background suggest, “Strong and Stable” makes a statement about current socio-cultural issues. The title “Strong and Stable” refers to a phrase that former British Prime Minister Theresa May has used almost like an incantation.

The music of “Strong and Stable” is a spoof of modern narratives and the obvious misdirections that come with them, yet it does not picture a bleak dystopia. It’s like travesty by three old white men that makes your hips shake while you laugh out loud at an disturbing situation

Groove is the ground, that gives orientation”
– Dirk Schlömer.

Wöstheinrich, Spahn & Lankow – Materiaal 055︱The Wedding Sessions 20220129

Materiaal Series, Vol. 055

Recording of the third session together with artist Wolfgang Spahn and his large, self-built modular system in Wolfgang’s studio in the Gerichtshöfe, January 29, 2022; Wedding district in Berlin.

This release is themed op-art, as Christine Kriegerowski has contributed her takes on Vasarely’s “Reech”.

Wolfgang Spahn is an Austrian-German visual artist based in Berlin. His work includes interactive installations and performances of light & sound. His art explores the field of analogue and digital media and focuses on both their contradiction and their correlation. That’s why he is also specialized in re-appropriated and re-purposed electronic technologies.

For his creations he explores the abilities of hardware, constantly pushing its limitations in order to make it serve his artistic concept. Recently he developed analogue synthesizers as well as analogue computers and analog neuron networks and uses them to create abstract light-and-sound-sculptures.
