Zam Johnson, Rainer Frey, Bernhard Wöstheinrich – Polyphony Performance Series 006-20230416

POLYPHONY AT THE BAIZ, SESSION 006

Recorded live at the “Polyphonie im BAIZ” (“Polyphony at the BAIZ”), Berlin, on April 16, 2024, featuring Zam Johnson.

OUR GUEST FOR THIS EVENT: ZAM JOHNSON
Zam has been in Berlin since 1987 and has played a decisive role in shaping Berlin’s musical landscape ever since. Prior to that in Los Angeles, he was involved in many sessions and recordings and was on tour with Iron Butterfly and Sweet Inspirations.
Here in Berlin, he has attracted attention as a jazz drummer in countless formations. But also as a multi-instrumentalist and composer of plays, compositions for Butoh dance (Yumiko Yoshioka and Minako Seki), experimental guitarist for Bob Rutman, drummer for Lars Rudolph’s Stan Red Fox to name just a few.

“Polyphonie im BAIZ” a series of extraordinary music performances at BAIZ in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin
Every third Tuesday of the month, there is a performance at the venue where Rainer Frey and myself perform as a duo, or as a trio with different guests, or maybe even solo from time to time. The music explores a wide range of sonic possibilities, starting with the electric guitar and atmospheric electronica and venturing into uncharted soundscapes. They see themselves as influenced by Berlin’s tradition of experimental and informal art and music.

“Polyphonie im BAIZ” pushes the boundaries of genres, creates new sonic spaces, and celebrates spontaneous musical interaction. These performances are open, allowing for freedom of expression and resulting in daring and unpredictable creations. The final outcome of each performance is always provisional, leaving room for the unexpected in future showcases.
