This impromptu music performance was recorded in one take, with no overdubs or pre-recorded parts, on August 22 2025 in Berlin-Kreuzberg, Germany.

The Material Series is a home for sonic experiments, impromptu jams, studio sessions, and live recordings, but it is also an ongoing visual collaboration with artist Christine Kriegerowski. In addition to creating the artwork for each album, Christine often provides stories or anecdotes to accompany her pieces. Here is her contribution for this release:

“Imagine you are an experienced alpine vegetable climber striving to reach the summit of a remote head of German turnip in a long-forgotten yard, almost 6,000 metres above sea level. The cold seeps through every layer of clothing. Your oxygen supply is running low. Below you, the unstable ice is crackling. Then you look up. Blocking your way directly in front of you is an enormous bear. It seems that this expedition is over.
This isn’t a myth, but one of many stories about the extraordinary group of Brassicaceae. The Kohlrabi is so extreme that only one expedition has ever made it to its peak. Beets are either deadly, unreachable or forbidden. All other attempts ended in withdrawal or failure. It finally becomes clear why those turnips only have one entry in the history books and why even that is almost beyond imagination.

It’s almost miraculous that anyone ever survived it. Our flight goes over the western Hesse. Below, green cruciferous plants grow out of a chaotic landscape of broken glaciers, resembling the walls of a ruined fortress. In the middle of this labyrinth, a turnip cabbage stands tall. It is well known, yet serious attempts to reach its summit are rare. Though overshadowed by a more famous turnip, the Kohlrabi is indeed in the same league in terms of danger, isolation, and unpredictability. From a distance, it almost appears elegant, like a sphere with sharp edges and hollows. However, the closer you get, the more dangerous it becomes. The slopes are crisscrossed by unstable ridges, and vegetable climbers describe the ascent as a series of serious dangers with no safe route through it.
Over the course of several decades, several teams re-attempted the first ascent. No one ever got very far. Recent expeditions have reported finding rotten vegetable purée underfoot, rockfalls sweeping across entire slopes, and sudden weather changes escalating into storms within minutes. Even highly experienced mountaineers could not find a safe ascent route. Many turned back before reaching a high-altitude camp, not due to technical difficulties but due to the constant fear that the Kohlrabi itself might collapse. This mystery was solved only once.”
